Common perception is average : I don't own one but did some research on it and can tell you that my feelings are mixed. Some people love it some people don't. The only things attracts me to this model is its design and GPS Audio and Video storage.

Rather expensive GPS device : RoadMate 800 is has been one great realization for me it portable and yet has a gigantic 20GB built in hard disk that helps maintain a huge database. The touch screen feature is elegant and it has a very clear display. It comes with a wide variety of maps which where preloaded and hence I did not have to spend more money in downloading new ones, the built in rechargeable battery is great and gives supply for a quite a while. The navigation portion of the unit is very accurate and has a lot more POIs then in previous models. The screen is very bright. The 3D Bird’s eye view is way fantastic. It comes with a mp3 player and picture display. Although the pros outweigh the cons there are quite a few. I am unable to use MP3/Photo feature concurrently with GPS so either listen to my music or to the GPS device which does not mention road names. Since the maps come preloaded it appears that Magellan has forgotten to give out Map updates. It does need to be a lot louder; it has frozen up on various occasions and had to be restarted. The live traffic feature is not an option and this is some thing I really miss. Another thing that irritates me about all Magellan GPS's, in order to add your own POIs you need to use the desktop utility, have the latitude and longitude as well as the elevation. This some thing I don’t take well to. A well built but rather expensive GPS device.
